Las Vegas Aces Reach Third WNBA Finals Despite Indiana Fever’s Strong Challenge

LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Aces secured their third WNBA Finals appearance in four years with a thrilling overtime win against the Indiana Fever on September 30. This victory came after a dramatic Game 5 that saw the Fever push the Aces to the limit.
Aces head coach Becky Hammon, a Hall of Famer and former player, has led the team to championship victories in her first two seasons. Despite falling short in the semifinals last year, Hammon’s leadership this season has once again brought the Aces to the finals.
The Aces faced the Fever in a winner-take-all matchup. The game was a true nail-biter, featuring intense back-and-forth action and strong defensive plays. The Fever lost star guard Kelsey Mitchell to cramps during the third quarter, yet they rallied to tie the game at 86 at the end of regulation.
Coach Stephanie White’s Fever team didn’t back down. They embraced adversity throughout the season, overcoming significant injuries, including the loss of star guard Caitlin Clark. White motivated her team to maintain their focus and fight through tough moments, while acknowledging the challenges they faced.
Hammon praised the Fever’s resilience after the game. “I first would like to congratulate Indiana. They just would not go away. The resiliency of [Stephanie White’s] group, I mean, they went through a lot of adversity this year,” she said. “It’s truly incredible that the Fever managed to keep themselves in playoff contention all season long.”
Despite the Aces being a heavily favored team, the Fever’s efforts were commendable. They demonstrated grit, especially in forcing overtime against a championship-caliber team. During the decisive five-minute overtime, the Aces showcased their experience, led by Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, and reigning WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson.
Mitchell, who suffered a significant injury during the game, was reported to be recovering. Hammon expressed concern for her and offered well wishes, demonstrating respect for the Fever and their coaching staff’s leadership.
As the Aces prepare for the finals against the Phoenix Mercury, the Fever will look ahead to rebuilding for next season.
