LeBron James Teases Retirement Amid Strong 2024 NBA Season

LOS ANGELES, California — LeBron James, star forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, hinted at his potential retirement during a recent social media post. In a seven-second video shared on June 14, James participated in a mock press conference where a reporter asked about retirement rumors. The video abruptly ended as he began to reply, leaving fans in suspense.
In the social media post, James captioned the video, “I’ve been asking myself the same question…” accompanied by shush and crown emojis. This playful tease has sparked widespread speculation about his future in the NBA.
James just completed his 22nd NBA season, demonstrating impressive performance even at age 40. He averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game, showcasing his ongoing prowess on the court. He also achieved 10 triple-doubles, marking the highest total since his fourth NBA championship season in 2019-20.
Additionally, he earned his 21st consecutive All-Star nod, extending the record for the most All-Star appearances in league history. After turning 40 on December 30, James averaged 25.1 points per game, the highest for any player aged 40 or older.
James made history this season by becoming the first player to compete in the NBA while his son, Bronny James, was drafted. The father-son duo played together in 21 games during the past season. If James continues to play in the 2025-26 season, it would mark his 23rd year in the league, breaking a tie with Vince Carter for the longest career in NBA history.
Despite speculation about his retirement, James has yet to make an official decision. He stated he would consider his future after the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs. Fans eagerly await further announcements, with many expressing hopes that he will continue to play.
