Lebron James Los Angeles Lakers Clutch Moments

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 20, 2025 – LeBron James continues to grapple with critical last-second shot opportunities, raising concerns for the Los Angeles Lakers‘ playoff aspirations. In a recent game against the Charlotte Hornets, James missed two potential game-tying three-pointers during the closing moments, contributing to a 100-97 loss.

Since joining the Lakers in 2018, James has converted only 1-of-29 go-ahead or game-tying attempts in the final five seconds of regulation or overtime, according to ESPN’s Get Up. Despite these struggles, James concluded the game with impressive stats: 26 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds, two blocks, and one steal, shooting 10-of-22 from the field.

While his late-game shooting woes are notable, James remains a clutch performer overall. He leads the team with an average of 2.9 points per game in clutch scenarios—defined as the last five minutes of a game when the score is within five points—shooting 50 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from the three-point line this season.

The Lakers currently hold a 32-21 record, placing them fifth in the Western Conference standings. With the playoffs looming, the team is focused on consistency, particularly with the recent addition of Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks via a blockbuster trade.

Dončić’s arrival has generated excitement among fans, but he has only played two games for the Lakers since the trade, as he manages a calf strain. He averaged 15 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4 assists in 47 total minutes on the court. His impact along with James is anticipated to bolster the Lakers’ chances in tight games.

Head coach JJ Redick emphasized the importance of integrating Dončić into the team while being cautious not to strain him, especially with upcoming back-to-back games. “We’re still waiting to see the full effect of Luka and LeBron together,” Redick said prior to the game against the Hornets.

Although James’ long-term health remains a priority, he is expected to play against the Hornets, marking his return after dealing with foot and ankle injuries that kept him from participating in the All-Star Game for the first time in his career.

The addition of Dončić has sparked discussions about the duo’s chemistry, particularly given their similar skills as primary facilitators. Both players will need time to adjust to sharing ball-handling responsibilities, but their complementary strengths might prove to be a recipe for success.

Luka Dončić reflected on his relationship with the Lakers’ all-time leading scorer. “I just wish Kobe and Gigi were here to see this moment,” he said, referencing the late Kobe Bryant, who has become a symbolic figure for the franchise. “I’m excited about this new journey and happy to be here.” With playoff positioning heating up, the Lakers have a critical opportunity to solidify their place in the postseason during the final stretch of the season.
