COVENTRY, England — Leeds United extended their lead at the top of the Sky Bet Championship with a commanding 3-0 victory over Coventry City at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday night. Joel Piroe, Jayden Bogle, and Dan James were on target for the visitors, who now sit five points clear at the summit.
Leeds took control early, with Piroe opening the scoring in the 13th minute after a clinical finish from a Manor Solomon pass. Bogle doubled the lead just before halftime, capitalizing on a poor clearance from Coventry goalkeeper Oliver Dovin. James sealed the win in the second half, exploiting defensive lapses to make it 3-0.
Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, struggled to contain Leeds’ attacking prowess. Dovin had a night to forget, with his errors contributing to two of the goals. “It should be 3-0,” said former Coventry goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic on BBC CWR. “Coventry are all over the place.”
Leeds’ dominance was evident in the statistics, with 63% possession and 13 shots on target. Coventry, meanwhile, managed just three attempts, none of which seriously tested Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
This victory extends Leeds’ unbeaten run to six games, during which they have scored 17 goals. Piroe’s strike was his 13th of the season, moving him within two of Championship top scorer Borja Sainz. “No Piroe, no party,” chanted the traveling Leeds fans, celebrating their star striker’s contribution.
Coventry, sitting 11th in the table, have now lost ground in their push for a playoff spot. Lampard lamented his team’s lack of competitiveness, saying, “We gave them too much respect, and they punished us.”
Leeds manager Daniel Farke praised his team’s clinical performance. “We were focused and ruthless tonight,” he said. “This is the standard we need to maintain.”
The result leaves Leeds in pole position for automatic promotion, while Coventry must regroup ahead of their next fixture against Ipswich Town in the FA Cup.
