MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — Hubie Brown, a Hall of Fame broadcaster and former NBA coach, will call his final game Sunday, capping a remarkable career spanning over five decades. The 91-year-old will work alongside Mike Breen for ABC‘s telecast of the Philadelphia 76ers–Milwaukee Bucks game, marking the end of an era in NBA broadcasting.
Brown, who began his coaching career in Milwaukee with the Bucks in 1972, has transitioned seamlessly between coaching and broadcasting throughout his career. Known for his detailed analysis and passion for the game, he has called 18 NBA Finals and earned induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.
“He has probably taught more people about the game of basketball than anybody that’s ever lived,” said Mike Breen, Brown’s longtime broadcasting partner. “His preparation and dedication are unparalleled.”
Brown’s distinctive broadcasting style, which includes calling the lane “the painted area” and emphasizing strategy with phrases like “you must,” has made him a beloved figure among basketball fans. Hall of Famer Bernard King, who played under Brown, praised his ability to educate viewers. “He would help the viewer understand exactly what happened and why it happened,” King said.
Despite his extensive experience, Brown remains meticulous in his preparation. He watches both teams play at least twice before a game and reviews the latest statistics and strategies. “You want to be able to paint the picture, you want to be able to educate the fan to another level of expertise,” he said.
Brown’s final broadcast comes in the same city where his NBA coaching career began. While he downplays the significance of Sunday’s game being about him, fans and colleagues alike recognize the milestone. “This is a big game,” Brown said. “When you say Philadelphia and Milwaukee, if you were talking before the season started, you’d say the two of them have a chance to challenge Boston. But because of the injuries, we have no idea who’s going to start for both teams. When we go on air, it’s going to be interesting.”
Breen reflected on their partnership, calling it “one of the blessings of my life.” Sunday’s game will also be Breen’s record 20th NBA Finals.
Hubie Brown’s legacy extends beyond broadcasting. His influence as a coach and educator has shaped generations of basketball players and fans, cementing his place as one of the sport’s most enduring voices.
