Kilmar Abrego Garcia Deportation News

Monrovia, Liberia – The Government of Liberia has agreed to accept Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, on humanitarian grounds as his deportation from the United States continues to generate legal and human rights concerns.

The decision, announced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), comes after a federal court was informed that Liberia was willing to accept Abrego Garcia. The DHS stated plans for his transfer are underway and anticipate removal could occur as soon as October 31.

Abrego Garcia had been living in Maryland with his family before he was deported to El Salvador in March 2023, despite a court ruling that prevented his removal due to the risk of persecution. He was accused by the Trump administration of being affiliated with the criminal gang MS-13, a claim his family and attorneys have denied.

In June, Abrego Garcia was brought back to the U.S. to face charges of human smuggling in Tennessee, to which he has pleaded not guilty. After being released to his brother’s custody, he was detained again by immigration officials and has since been held in Pennsylvania.

U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, who is overseeing his case, has temporarily blocked immigration authorities from removing him from the country. The latest development follows a previous removal notice from DHS for Ghana, which was also halted.

In its statement, the Liberian government confirmed that accepting Abrego Garcia is strictly temporary and emphasizes its commitment to humane treatment. The decision reflects Liberia’s historical tradition of providing refuge and comes after thorough discussions with relevant stakeholders.

Additionally, Liberia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry outlined essential safeguards for Abrego Garcia’s transfer, including comprehensive vetting, respect for due process, and assurances that he will not face persecution upon arrival.

The ministry reiterated Liberia’s dedication to international cooperation and upholding principles of dignity and justice.
