Linda Sarsour Vows to Hold Zohran Mamdani Accountable After Election
New York City, NY — Palestinian-American activist Linda Sarsour warned mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani that she will hold him accountable for his campaign promises if he wins. During an Instagram livestream, Sarsour emphasized that supporting Mamdani does not mean he will have a free pass once in office.
“I just want you all to know I’m not going to work for the Zohran administration,” Sarsour stated. “Our job as a movement is we have to hold whoever goes to City Hall accountable.” Sarsour has previously mentored Mamdani and has been a prominent figure in his campaign.
Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has promised to disband the NYPD‘s Strategic Response Group, which has been criticized for its role in monitoring protests and terrorism threats. Despite his intentions, Sarsour expressed concerns about his decision to retain Jessica Tisch as NYPD commissioner.
On the livestream, Sarsour said, “I wasn’t really happy about the news that he was going to keep Tisch on for the NYPD.” She stressed that if Mamdani’s directives are not followed, community members must step in. “What are you going to do to hold your police commissioner accountable to the plan?” she asked.
Sarsour’s comments come amid a backdrop of protests linked to recent conflicts, with many demonstrators supporting Mamdani’s campaign. She acknowledged that the community’s role does not end at the ballot box. “When he does something when he’s in City Hall and he’s wrong, I’m going to tell him he’s wrong,” she stated.
She also pointed out that voting for Mamdani means expecting him to be accountable to the people who helped him get elected. “Zohran is going to have to tell his own critics that… I’m accountable to them,” she said.
In addition to her support for Mamdani, Sarsour expressed her endorsement for other Muslim candidates in the United States. She hopes for a new type of politics to emerge from this election cycle, finishing her remarks with, “Inshallah, you know, we start a new type of politics, right?” The Mamdani campaign did not respond to a request for comment regarding Sarsour’s statements.
