Gary Lineker jokingly banned Micah Richards from saying ‘it’s coming home’ during BBC‘s live broadcast of England‘s Euro 2024 opener against Serbia, as Gareth Southgate‘s Three Lions secured a 1-0 victory at the VELTINS Arena in Gelsenkirchen. The goal by Jude Bellingham in the 13th minute proved decisive in putting England atop Group C.

Richards, on the BBC, discussed Southgate’s bold choices like leaving out key players including Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford. He added that harmonizing the squad with emerging talent could lead to England ‘bringing it home,’ prompting Lineker to humorously ban the popular phrase.

Although England started strong against Serbia, their second-half performance raised concerns as some players struggled to create impactful chances. Phil Foden, from Manchester City, faced challenges adapting to Southgate’s system, with Richards expressing disappointment in Foden’s limited impact during the match.

Southgate, in his post-match comments, noted the necessity for England to ‘suffer’ against tough opponents like Serbia. He praised his team’s defensive efforts and emphasized the importance of securing the win despite some shortcomings in ball retention during the second half.
