Liverpool Sets Sights on Ekitike After Isak Hopes Fade

LIVERPOOL, England — Liverpool FC is intensifying its efforts to sign striker Hugo Ekitike this summer, as reported by journalist Lewis Steele, amid waning prospects of acquiring top target Alexander Isak from Newcastle. The Reds, currently leading the Premier League, aim for a second league title in 35 years during manager Arne Slot‘s inaugural season on Merseyside.
Despite recently suffering only their second league loss of the season to Fulham, Liverpool can further solidify their title run with a victory over West Ham this Sunday. Slot has made remarkable strides this season, specifically by assessing and leveraging the strengths of the squad he inherited from former manager Jürgen Klopp, with minimal additions aside from Federico Chiesa.
With the club backing Slot to make significant signings in what has been described as a ‘historical summer,’ strengthening the attacking line appears to be a primary focus. The acquisition of a new No. 9 is crucial as reports suggest Darwin Núñez could leave Liverpool. Although Slot has expressed admiration for Isak, prying him away from Newcastle proves to be complex.
Steele noted in a Q&A session, “Hugo Ekitike is the name that pops up the most when I speak to people, so I think it is fair to say he is one to keep a close eye on.” The young striker, who has netted 19 goals and provided eight assists for Eintracht Frankfurt this season, represents a promising target due to his experience in a top league and presence in European competitions.
As Liverpool scouts closely monitor Ekitike’s performance, including his recent hat-trick for France’s Under-21s against England, comparisons are drawn between Ekitike and Isak. Notably, Ekitike has accumulated a total of 23 goals in 56 matches for Frankfurt, who will face Tottenham in the Europa League quarter-finals. Liverpool’s interest has intensified due to his potential fit within their offensive structure.
Financially, securing Ekitike may be more feasible than Isak, with Frankfurt reportedly valuing the French international at around €80 million (£67 million, $87 million). This potential deal becomes increasingly attractive given Liverpool’s robust financial standing and their willingness to part with players like Diogo Jota, who could be moving to another Premier League club.
As Liverpool prepares for the upcoming season, the prospect of Ekitike lining up alongside Mohamed Salah remains hopeful, particularly after news broke regarding Salah’s contract situation that points towards continuity within the squad. Meanwhile, Ryan Gravenberch, another rising star, is generating speculation about a possible transfer to Real Madrid.
