Liverpool, England — Jeremie Frimpong is set to join Liverpool after agreeing to a five-year contract with the club. The Premier League team plans to activate his release clause of €35 million (approximately £29.6 million) from Bayer Leverkusen.

Frimpong’s transfer comes following the recent departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is heading to Real Madrid. The 24-year-old right-back played a vital role for Leverkusen, contributing 14 goals and 12 assists in 47 matches last season, which helped the team secure the Bundesliga title.

Since joining Leverkusen in January 2021, Frimpong has made a name for himself as one of Europe’s top right-backs, showcasing his dynamic attacking abilities. Sporting director Simon Rolfes praised him after renewing his contract until 2028 last October, labeling him “one of the best players” in his position.

Under the management of Xabi Alonso, Frimpong made 48 appearances this season, scoring five goals and providing 12 assists. His style of play has evolved; he has shifted from a more traditional right-back role to a wing-back position, emphasizing his offensive talents.

Reports emerged that Liverpool had pursued Frimpong since last summer, but Alonso had persuaded him to stay at Leverkusen for another season. The current news indicates negotiations have reached a critical point as Liverpool prepares for the medical examination required to finalize the transfer.

Frimpong’s arrival at Liverpool suggests a potential shift in tactical approach for manager Arne Slot, particularly in how the team’s right back will function following Alexander-Arnold’s departure. Liverpool has also extended the contract of right-back Conor Bradley, tying him to the club until 2029, indicating a focus on strengthening their defense.

As Frimpong prepares to join Liverpool, he will become the first signing of the summer and aims to make an impact alongside fellow Netherlands teammates at the club. The deal showcases Liverpool’s commitment to enhancing their squad as they plan for the upcoming season.
