Macklin Celebrini: The 18-Year-Old Hockey Phenom Taking the Bay Area by Storm
Macklin Celebrini, an 18-year-old hockey prodigy, is being hailed as the Bay Area’s next great sports star, drawing comparisons to NBA legend Stephen Curry. Celebrini made his NHL debut with the San Jose Sharks on October 10, 2024, and in just seven minutes, he scored his first NHL goal against the St. Louis Blues. This impressive start came in the first period of the Sharks’ home opener at the SAP Center in San Jose.
Celebrini’s journey to the NHL has been nothing short of remarkable. At 17, he became the youngest player to win the Hobey Baker Award while playing for Boston University. In the previous season, he dominated the United States Hockey League, earning titles as player of the year, rookie of the year, and forward of the year—a historic trifecta.
The young center is the son of Rick Celebrini, a renowned sports trainer who currently serves as the vice president of player health and performance for the Golden State Warriors. Rick’s influence and exposure to elite athletes from an early age have significantly shaped Macklin’s career. Notably, Warriors player Draymond Green is among Macklin’s biggest fans.
Despite suffering an injury in his debut game, Celebrini has continued to impress upon his return. In his second game back, he scored two more goals, including a no-look slapshot that has drawn comparisons to NFL star Patrick Mahomes. His charisma, work ethic, and natural talent have made him a magnet for attention and high expectations.
Celebrini has already accounted for four goals and three assists through his first 10 games with the Sharks, despite a brief stint on injured reserve. His recent performance includes a third-period goal against the Los Angeles Kings, giving the Sharks a 3-2 lead on Monday at the SAP Center.
