MADRID, Spain – Real Madrid has initiated contract renewal discussions with Vinicius Jr. well ahead of schedule, ESPN has learned, amid growing interest from Saudi Arabia‘s Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Vinicius Jr.’s current contract with Real Madrid runs until June 2027. Typically, the club begins negotiations with key players when they have approximately two years left on their contract.
However, the club decided to start talks early due to the persistent interest from the PIF, which has been monitoring the Brazilian attacker since last year, according to sources.
Real Madrid has contacted Vinicius Jr.’s representatives to express their intention to begin discussions, primarily focusing on a salary increase, ESPN has learned. These conversations are still in the early stages, and the club has not yet presented a formal offer with new terms for the renewal.
Sources close to the player say Vinicius Jr. is relaxed about his contractual situation, as he feels valued and is content with his current deal in Madrid.
Vinicius Jr.’s representatives are also awaiting a new approach from Saudi Arabia to understand the specifics of their potential offer before continuing negotiations with Real Madrid.
ESPN reported that representatives from PIF reconnected with Vinicius Jr. in December to maintain open lines of communication.
Madrid expects an official offer from the Middle East soon. Vinicius Jr. will analyze this offer before proceeding with discussions with Real Madrid.
A meeting between Real Madrid’s management and Vinicius Jr.’s representatives is scheduled in two weeks, coinciding with the match between Real Madrid and the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA playoffs.
The match will allow for discussions about extending his contract beyond 2027. Real Madrid expects to learn the player’s salary expectations, which will help the club formulate a formal offer to extend his contract, sources told ESPN.
