West Chester Pennsylvania Police Shooting Incident

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — A man was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon after a shooting incident near an apartment complex on South Church Street, according to local officials.

The ordeal began around 2:50 p.m. when multiple shots were reported, leading to a heavy police presence in the area. Residents reported hearing at least five gunshots, including one initial shot followed by a series of four consecutive shots.

Griffin Meanix, a witness living nearby, recounted the chaos. “When the two cops went in, we heard the bangs, and one of the other cops was just dragging the other out by his vest or whatnot. He had blood on his head but he stood up right away, so it looked like he was probably alright. It was crazy,” Meanix told NBC10.

As police engaged with the situation, a man was seen climbing onto the rooftops of surrounding homes. Meanix shared his concerns during the tense moments, stating, “It was pretty stressful. We were more worried he was going to jump or do something crazy.”

Video footage captured by Meanix showed law enforcement officers urging the man to come down peacefully. “You shot at us, that’s the only reason we shot back,” one officer stated in the video. Another clip revealed the alleged suspect in handcuffs as he was placed into the back of a police vehicle.

Another witness, Morgan Stabinski, expressed gratitude towards the officers’ efforts, saying, “They got him to come down without incident which is awesome. I think because it could’ve been a really tragic situation.”

The Chester County District Attorney’s Office has provided limited details regarding the incident, confirming that an individual was detained around 3:55 p.m., but has not disclosed the person’s identity or any potential charges. A spokesperson noted that additional information will not be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

Witnesses had initially reported a possible active shooter situation, with many sharing updates via social media. “I’m a couple doors down, cops are in my driveway,” one witness wrote on Facebook. Another shared, “Active shooter in West Chester. Please text your kids to get indoors if they are in town.”

As police from multiple departments responded to the scene, they also closed the 50 block of South Church Street. Emergency medical services and fire personnel were seen aiding in the operational response.
