Maac Championship Basketball Quarterfinals Manhattan Iona

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The Manhattan Jaspers will take on the Iona Gaels in the MAAC Championship quarterfinals at 6:00 PM on March 13, 2025, at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. Both teams enter the matchup with an identical 12-8 conference record, setting the stage for a highly competitive game.

The Jaspers, boasting an overall record of 17-13, will look to capitalize on their recent form, having won three of their last four games. Iona, performing slightly below expectations with a 16-16 overall record, hopes to build momentum from a strong finish to the regular season.

In their previous encounters this season, both teams displayed contrasting styles. Manhattan relies heavily on defense, with a field goal percentage of 32.8% in conference play, compared to Iona’s shooting efficiency of 46.7%. The Gaels also showcase a notable three-point shooting percentage at 40%, while the Jaspers struggle with just 19.4% from beyond the arc.

Turnovers could prove to be a pivotal factor as well, with Manhattan averaging 13 turnovers per game. “We need to take care of the ball and limit our mistakes to have a shot at victory,” said Jaspers coach Steve Masiello during a pre-game interview.

The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+, ensuring fans can follow the action as both teams jockey for position in the MAAC tournament. According to expert predictions, the Jaspers are currently favored by 1.5 points, but the matchup remains too close to call.

“Every game is important at this stage of the season. We’re focused on executing our game plan and giving ourselves a chance to win,” said Iona coach Rick Pitino in a press conference. The intensity of postseason play is palpable, with fans from both schools expected to fill the stands.

The winner of this quarterfinal matchup will advance to the semifinals in hopes of claiming the MAAC championship crown and securing a spot in the NCAA tournament.
