Maple Leafs Struggle in Florida, Series Tied 2-2

SUNRISE, Fla. — The Toronto Maple Leafs faced a disappointing defeat, losing 2-0 to the Florida Panthers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Second Round on Sunday at Amerant Bank Arena. The loss ties the best-of-seven series at 2-2.
Despite holding home-ice advantage and winning the first two games, the Maple Leafs failed to maintain momentum, conceding the last two matches. They struggled significantly, registering just 12 shots through two periods.
Toronto’s problems were largely self-inflicted. The team took four minor penalties during the first period, allowing Florida’s aggressive forecheck to gain control of the game. “We let off the gas, took dumb penalties. It was all our doing,” said forward Matthew Knies.
Florida capitalized on these opportunities. The Panthers opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Carter Verhaeghe at 15:45 of the first period. Correctly anticipating a pass, Verhaeghe fired a one-timer that beat Toronto goaltender Joseph Woll.
Woll, who made 35 saves during the match, kept his team in contention. However, the Panthers extended their lead to 2-0 in the third period when Sam Bennett scored at 12:09.
With a crucial Game 5 set for Wednesday at Scotiabank Arena, Toronto coach Craig Berube emphasized the need for improvement. “It’s hard to generate momentum when you spend half the game in the penalty box,” he mentioned.
The stakes are high, with the series now reduced to a best-of-three for the chance to advance. Matthew Tkachuk, who assisted on Verhaeghe’s goal, stated, “It’s going to be a tough fight going forward, but we’re excited for Game 5.”
Both teams have shown resilience, but only one will move closer to a spot in the next round. The question remains if the Maple Leafs can turn their fortunes around in the critical next game.
