Seattle Mariners Leody Taveras Baseball Player

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Seattle Mariners claimed outfielder Leody Taveras on waivers from the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, bolstering their injury-depleted lineup. Taveras, who has spent more than 500 games with the Rangers since 2020, was put on waivers on Sunday as Texas sought to improve its struggling offense.

The Mariners designated right-handed pitcher Luis F. Castillo to make room for Taveras on the 40-man roster. Taveras, 26, has been a notable player for the Rangers, but his production has fluctuated, culminating in a .241 batting average in 2025.

Taveras joins the Mariners with a remaining salary of about $3.6 million for the 2025 season, providing a low-cost addition to a team facing outfield injuries. Seattle was recently left without their lefty-hitting option, Luke Raley, who is on the injured list due to a right oblique strain.

In his 30 games this season, Taveras has one home run, three doubles, and six stolen bases on seven attempts, but his plate discipline has been concerning, with 23 strikeouts against only two walks. Despite these struggles, he brings speed and defensive skills that could help Seattle.

During the 2023 season, Taveras emerged as a key contributor to the Rangers’ World Series-winning team, hitting .266 with 14 home runs and 31 doubles. However, he saw a decline in offensive production last year, finishing with a .229 average and a .289 on-base percentage.

Now with the Mariners, Taveras will likely serve as part of a platoon in right field alongside recent call-ups Samad Taylor and Rhylan Thomas. The Mariners are currently on the road, playing the Athletics in Sacramento and looking to bounce back after recent struggles.

Taveras’s potential as a former top prospect previously ranked by Baseball America as the best talent in Texas’s farm system adds hope for Seattle’s lineup as they navigate player injuries.
