Maryland Prepares for Tornadoes with Statewide Drill on Wednesday

BALTIMORE, Md. — Maryland residents are encouraged to participate in the Great Maryland Twister Test Tornado Drill at 10 a.m. on Wednesday as part of Severe Storms Awareness Week. The drill, a collaboration between the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) and the National Weather Service (NWS), aims to prepare the state for potential tornado warnings.
During the exercise, the NWS will broadcast a tornado drill statement through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Radios. This initiative underscores the importance of preparedness among Maryland residents, schools, and businesses.
“It is crucial for everyone to know what to do during a tornado warning,” said an MDEM spokesperson. “We encourage all Marylanders to engage in tornado drills, whether at 10 a.m. or at a time that suits them best.”
By participating, citizens can learn vital safety measures, such as preparing emergency kits, identifying safe shelter areas, and understanding the actions to take before, during, and after a tornado emergency. MDEM highlights the increased risk of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in the region, especially this week.
Additionally, weather experts emphasize the dangers of flooding that persist due to rainy conditions. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles because individuals often underestimate the water depth,” said a local meteorologist. “Even just a foot of moving water can sweep away a car.”
Experts inform the public that it is essential to heed warnings when approaching flooded roadways, reiterating the phrase: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Walking through six inches of moving water can also pose serious risks, as it could knock a person off their feet.
Further into the week, the Maryland community will focus on tornado preparedness. The events serve to raise awareness and educate the public about the patterns and risks of severe storms, aiming to ensure that residents are equipped to respond effectively to emergencies.
