Matt Rhule Signs Two-Year Extension with Nebraska Football Through 2032
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him with the team through the 2032 season, the university announced Thursday.
The restructured deal increases Rhule’s buyout from $5 million to $15 million this season, effectively preventing him from taking another job in the current coaching cycle. Rhule, now in his third year at Nebraska, has led the team to a 6-2 record this season and secured the program’s first bowl game since 2016 last year.
In a statement, Rhule expressed his appreciation for the support from university leadership. “The University of Nebraska, the city of Lincoln and the state of Nebraska are special. It is a place our family is proud to call home,” he said. He highlighted the guidance he has received from Nebraska president Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold and athletic director Troy Dannen.
The new contract retains Rhule’s base salary but introduces a clause that increases his pay by $1 million for each College Football Playoff appearance. His average annual value over the life of the contract exceeds $11.7 million, placing him among the highest-paid college football coaches.
“Coach Rhule has shown he is the right leader at the right time for Nebraska Football,” Dannen said in a statement. “Our program has seen significant progress under Matt’s leadership, and continuity and stability are critical.”
Rhule’s journey at Nebraska commenced after five consecutive losing seasons under previous coach Scott Frost. He aims to transform the program, emphasizing toughness and accountability.
Rhule’s notable achievements include a conference title at Temple and a Sugar Bowl appearance during his time at Baylor. As Nebraska heads into their matchup against USC, the extension solidifies Rhule’s commitment to the program.
Nebraska is looking to continue its momentum as they have not achieved back-to-back bowls since 2016. Rhule’s leadership has promised a bright future for the Cornhuskers and Husker Nation.
