Maya Parbhoe’s Presidential Bid Faces Credibility Issues in Suriname

PARAMARIBO, Suriname — Maya Parbhoe, a political candidate in Suriname, has come under scrutiny as reports suggest discrepancies in her portrayal of herself as a prominent pro-Bitcoin presidential contender. Her claims of combating corruption and leveraging Bitcoin for economic recovery are allegedly overstated, according to sources familiar with the political landscape in Suriname.
Since announcing her candidacy for the May 25, 2025 elections, Parbhoe has gained attention in the international Bitcoin community for vowing to make Bitcoin legal tender in Suriname. However, local observers have noted that her efforts appear disconnected from grassroots sentiment and the reality of Suriname’s political framework.
Some reports indicate that Parbhoe’s candidacy is not widely recognized among Surinamese citizens, and her messaging seems largely absent from public discourse. One anonymous source described her as exhibiting disdain towards poorer communities she claims to represent. Additionally, U.S. intelligence reports suggest Parbhoe may be acting as ‘controlled opposition,’ implying her candidacy is a facade designed to placate political discontent.
Parbhoe’s familial background has also come under fire, with allegations of her father’s ties to criminal enterprises circulating in recent discussions. Despite these claims, Parbhoe has maintained that her father’s business dealings were legitimate and claims her political platform aims to reclaim his legacy of fighting corruption.
Suriname’s political system is currently evolving, shifting from a parliamentary model toward individual voting. Parbhoe has stated that she plans to capitalize on this change to gather votes, stating she requires 5,380 votes to secure a parliamentary seat. However, during recent polling, her name did not emerge among the most prominent candidates.
Dr. Jack Kruse, who interacted with Parbhoe in person, expressed doubts about her ability to deliver on her promises, echoing concerns shared by other observers who question her authenticity and business acumen. Some associates have described her campaign as disorganized, lacking a credible platform focused on Bitcoin-related initiatives.
Despite the obstacles, Parbhoe remains steadfast in her aspirations, stating that her daughter’s recent birth has provided new perspective on her political ambitions. “No election is worth her life,” she remarked but remains committed to advocating for Bitcoin in Suriname regardless of her electoral outcome. “I’ll continue to fight for her future and beyond May 25th.”
As the election approaches, confidence in Parbhoe’s viability as a candidate continues to wane, raising critical questions about whether she can fulfill the promises made in her campaign.
