Mean Green Aim for Fourth Straight Win Against Owls

HOUSTON, TX – The University of North Texas men’s basketball team (17-6, 8-3 AAC) is set to face off against the Rice Owls (12-12, 3-8 AAC) on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. CT at Tudor Fieldhouse. Coming off a solid 76-66 victory over Tulane on Saturday, the Mean Green are looking to extend their winning streak to four games.

North Texas recently demonstrated offensive prowess against Tulane, matching their season-high with 11 three-pointers and boasting an offensive efficiency rating of 135.8. Head coach Ross Hodge expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting, “I thought our guys just did a really good job in the first half of thinking shot and stepping into it.” The Mean Green previously defeated Rice 81-59 in their initial meeting this season.

The Mean Green have enjoyed success against the Owls, having not lost at Rice since February 1, 2020. Additionally, they lead the all-time series in games played in Houston, 11-5. With a victory on Tuesday, Hodge will set the program record for the most league wins (19) in a head coach’s first two seasons.

Meanwhile, the Owls have struggled this season but remain a competitive opponent. Their head coach will look for fireworks to boost Rice, who is hoping to turn the tide after losing to Tulane in a recent match. The key to North Texas’s strategy lies in their defense, which has improved significantly, with a rating of only 96.6 points allowed per possession.

Both teams will battle hard, and North Texas is eager to capitalize on their momentum from recent games. After their match against Rice, the Mean Green will host Tulsa on February 19, marking their first and only regular season game against them.
