Melinda French Gates Memoir 2025

SEATTLE, Washington — Melinda French Gates reveals in her new memoir, “The Next Day,” that her marriage to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates faced serious challenges by 2019, particularly following revelations about his infidelities and connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In her memoir, released on May 20, 2025, Melinda describes a pivotal moment occurring in October 2019 when The New York Times published an article raising serious concerns about Bill’s behavior, suggesting he had betrayed not just their marriage but also her values.

She notes Bill’s longstanding friendship with Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while jailed on sex trafficking charges. Despite Bill’s expressions of regret over their association, he has faced no accusations of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein. “In retrospect, I was foolish to spend any time with him,” Bill stated in a Wall Street Journal interview.

Melinda shared how she learned of Bill’s infidelities and said that Epstein was a key factor in her decision to leave the marriage. “I did not like that he had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein,” she told CBS Mornings host Gayle King, recalling her own bitter feelings after meeting Epstein once.

Melinda, 60, and Bill finalized their divorce in August 2021 after 27 years of marriage. They have three children: Jennifer, 29; Rory, 25; and Phoebe, 22.

In her book, Melinda recounts discussing their separation amidst personal moments, like stopping for burgers while driving together to inform their children. She highlights how these conversations were initially tender despite the pain of their situation. The couple’s decision to part was influenced by incidents where she felt a loss of trust.

Bill acknowledged his past infidelity, citing an affair with a Microsoft employee in 2000, which Melinda said was a significant turning point for her.

Reflecting on her philanthropic journey, Melinda emphasizes her mission to support women and promote gender equality through her initiatives, particularly after stepping down from the Gates Foundation in May 2024. With a net worth of $30.7 billion, she remains one of the world’s wealthiest women.

Looking ahead, Melinda seems determined to continue making a positive impact. “We all have power, but there are barriers in society that often keep women from using our full power,” she stated. “Our job is to help remove those barriers.”
