Meteorologist Keith Carson Leaves WCSH for Maine Conservation Voters
PORTLAND, Maine — After nearly two decades of television weather reporting, News Center Maine meteorologist Keith Carson announced his departure from WCSH. He will begin a new role with the Maine Conservation Voters, focusing on science and climate communications. Carson revealed on Monday that his final newscast will air on Friday.
Carson’s fascination with weather began at a young age, sparked by the Blizzard of 1993 when he was just 10 years old. He noted this event marked a pivotal moment in his life, transitioning from enjoying snow days to being captivated by meteorological phenomena. “I started going out to this field down the street, trying to catch thunderstorms on a camera,” Carson explained.
Throughout his career, Carson reported on many significant weather events. One notable moment was Winter Storm Nemo in 2013, which blanketed Portland with a record-breaking 30 inches of snow in a single day. Reflecting on that storm, he shared, “I remember looking out the window and just thinking, ‘I’ve never seen it rip snow like this.'” Carson also recalled an unexpected freezing rainstorm that caught many meteorologists off guard, including himself.
As he transitions to his new position, Carson expressed excitement about contributing to climate change conversations. He intends to leverage his meteorological background to offer unique insights on climate advocacy. “It’s not the same answer for everyone as to what makes them care about conservation,” he stated, emphasizing the need for tailored messaging.
In a heartfelt farewell video, Carson thanked his family, colleagues, and viewers for their support throughout his career, highlighting the open-mindedness of Mainers that allowed him to flourish in his role. He expressed hope that his new direction will inspire impactful discussions about Maine’s climate future.
