Mets Call Up Left-Hander Waddell for Diamondbacks Game

Flushing, N.Y. – The New York Mets have officially selected the contract of left-hander Brandon Waddell from Triple-A Syracuse on April 30, 2025. Waddell’s call-up comes as the team navigates a grueling stretch of 13 consecutive games.
Waddell, 31, is set to make his first major league appearance since 2021, where he last played for the Baltimore Orioles. This decision allows the Mets to give their starting pitchers an additional day of rest, as they faced the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Though it is not yet confirmed, Waddell may start the game or pitch significant innings in relief. The team had an available spot on the 40-man roster after designating veteran José Ureña for assignment earlier that day.
This season with Syracuse, Waddell has impressed, posting a 1.54 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP across five starts, with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 21:7 in 23 1/3 innings. His minor league success comes after spending the previous two seasons in Korea, serving as a pitcher for the Doosan Bears in the KBO League.
Prior to his time overseas, Waddell pitched parts of two seasons for Major League teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates and Minnesota Twins. His MLB career records show a 5.68 ERA spread across 12 2/3 innings, and now he aims to make a significant impact with the Mets.
“I’m ready to step up and help the team any way I can,” Waddell said when asked about his upcoming appearance. “I’ve worked hard for this opportunity, and I’m looking forward to being on the mound again.”
The Mets hope Waddell’s performance will provide a boost as they prepare for their upcoming match against the Diamondbacks, facing a team that has demonstrated strong offensive capabilities.
