Mets Secure Lead Heading into Ninth Inning Against Phillies in NLDS Game 3
The New York Mets returned to Citi Field for the first time in over three weeks, facing off against the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of the National League Division Series (NLDS). The series stood tied at 1-1, raising the stakes for the home team as they sought victory in front of their fans. “It definitely brings a different energy being here at home, for sure,” said Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Francisco Lindor drove in J.D. Martinez with an RBI double, widening the Mets’ lead over the Phillies to 7-2. This crucial hit came off Phillies closer Carlos Estevez, who was brought into the game to contain the Mets’ offense. Previously, the Mets had maximized their opportunities against Phillies pitchers with tactful hitting and aggressive baserunning.
Earlier in the game, the Mets had built up their lead with notable contributions from several players. Mets pitcher Sean Manaea had a strong outing, allowing just one earned run on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts over seven innings. However, the Phillies managed to reduce the gap when Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos scored runs in the eighth inning.
The Mets’ offensive efforts intensified in the seventh inning, starting with a single by Mark Vientos, followed by walks to Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso, which loaded the bases. Jose Iglesias delivered a pivotal two-run single against new Phillies pitcher Jose Ruiz, extending the Mets’ lead to 6-0.
Aaron Nola began the game for the Phillies, keeping the Mets within reach for much of his time on the mound. Despite his commendable eight-strikeout performance, Nola conceded four runs in five innings. Mets’ Jesse Winker and Starling Marte were instrumental in scoring, each contributing key hits that pushed the Mets ahead.
In the early innings, the Mets capitalized on Aaron Nola’s early mistakes. A solo home run by Pete Alonso in the second inning marked the team’s initial breakthrough, and Alonso’s recent performances have been crucial for the Mets in the postseason.
The tension remains high as the game heads into the final inning with the Mets holding a significant lead, positioning themselves for a potential series victory at their hometown ballpark.
