Mia Threapleton Balances Star Parentage with Own Acting Ambitions

London, England — Mia Threapleton is stepping into the spotlight with confidence as she embarks on her own acting journey, despite being the daughter of Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet. In a recent interview, Threapleton shared her early aspirations of becoming an actress, recalling the moment she revealed her dreams to her mother. “I remember her being quite caught off-guard, going, ‘Oh, really? OK,'” the 24-year-old said.
Threapleton’s passion for acting ignited when she was just 10 years old. However, it wasn’t until five years later that she began actively pursuing auditions. By the age of 15, she was seeking opportunities on online casting boards, emphasizing her desire to succeed independently. “I wanted to do that on my own,” she stated, addressing the prominent issue of nepotism within the acting community. “You can’t choose your parents. You can’t.”
The entertainment industry is no stranger to famous offspring making their mark. Celebrity kids like Busy Philipps‘ daughter, Birdie, and Milla Jovovich‘s daughter, Ever, have all ventured into acting, raising questions about inherited talent. Threapleton’s journey has been distinct, especially since her early role was alongside her mother in the acclaimed 2022 series, “I Am Ruth,” where she played a troubled teenager navigating the pitfalls of social media under her character’s watchful and distressed mother.
In the interview, Threapleton expressed gratitude for her mother’s support. “She was very encouraging of me doing it on my own and for myself, having the experiences being mine and mine alone. But she always emphasized the hard work that goes into it and the effort that needs to go into it,” Threapleton explained.
Mia’s breakthrough came earlier this year in the Wes Anderson film, “The Phoenician Scheme,” where she stars opposite Hollywood heavyweights like Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston. Her character, Sister Liesl, serves as the film’s moral compass in a vibrant, comedic narrative.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Threapleton noted the misconceptions that come with being a celebrity’s child. “I can count probably on one and a half hands, the amount of times that I did that as a child, and I don’t really remember any of them,” she mentioned, pointing out the regularity of a non-glamorous home life. The family dynamic allowed her to appreciate her experiences without overwhelming celebrity influences.
As she prepares for her first Cannes Film Festival debut, Threapleton admits feeling both excited and nervous. “I’m going to be like a little shaking leaf!” she exclaimed, highlighting the thrill of navigating the film industry as a new talent. With each project, she aims to absorb everything she can, proving that even the child of a star can forge their own path in the competitive world of acting.
“The Phoenician Scheme” is set to hit cinemas this Friday, marking another chapter in Threapleton’s burgeoning career.
