Michael Gove Suggests Boris Johnson Comeback Amid Conservative Party Campaign

Amid the ongoing Conservative Party election campaign, Michael Gove, the Levelling Up Secretary, has hinted at the potential comeback of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Gove emphasized the need for the entire Conservative family to unite in an effort to thwart what he referred to as the ‘nightmare of a Starmer premiership’, expressing concerns about Labour leader Starmer’s ability to defend the country.

When asked about the possibility of Boris Johnson returning to campaign alongside the party in the upcoming general election, Gove, in an interview with GB News, highlighted the transformative power of campaigns and the pivotal role Johnson played in the successful Brexit campaign. Describing Johnson as a ‘great campaigner’, Gove stressed the importance of Conservative unity to prevent a Starmer leadership.

Currently facing significant polling challenges, with the Conservative Party trailing Labour by approximately 20 points, Gove addressed questions on whether the party had failed to deliver on its promise to ‘level up the country’. Responding, Gove expressed confidence in the party’s efforts, particularly highlighting recent investments benefiting Northern communities.

During the Convention of the North, Gove unveiled plans to allocate £90 million of government funds to Blackpool for a comprehensive housing transformation initiative. He underscored the significance of empowering local leaders and communities, emphasizing the importance of bridging social and economic divides through devolution of power.

Describing the occasion as a historic moment for the North, Gove reiterated commitments to decentralize power and resources, citing successful deals with mayors from regions like West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. These agreements aim to enhance local control over crucial areas such as skills, transport, and housing, ultimately facilitating improved opportunities and living conditions for residents.
