Michelin Guide Expands to Boston and Philadelphia This Year

BOSTON, MA — The Michelin Guide is set to debut in Boston and Philadelphia, expanding its reach in North America. The announcement was made Monday, May 12, 2025, by representatives from Michelin, Meet Boston, and the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau. This marks a significant development for the culinary scenes in both cities.
Michelin Guide spokesperson Carly Grieff confirmed that inspectors have already begun evaluating restaurants in Boston and its surrounding areas. The inaugural selections for Boston and Philadelphia will be revealed at a Northeast Cities Michelin Guide Ceremony later this year, although the date and location have yet to be determined.
This decision to include Boston and Philadelphia comes after a rapid expansion of Michelin’s coverage across North America. In the last two years, the guide has added new regions, including Atlanta, and will soon cover multiple southern states such as Alabama and Louisiana.
Meet Boston has not disclosed the financial specifics of their partnership with Michelin, but they emphasize the importance of Michelin ratings in boosting the city’s culinary reputation. O’Donnell, Vice President of Communications at Meet Boston, explained that the guide offers ‘unprecedented prestige and recognition’ that could significantly influence traveler decisions.
As part of the selection process, Michelin inspectors will independently evaluate eateries based on quality, flavor, and the chef’s style. The inspectors will not limit their focus strictly to Boston but will also assess nearby areas for outstanding dining experiences.
Both local officials and restaurant owners view this as a pivotal moment for their communities. ‘The local passion, talent, and camaraderie in both Boston and Philadelphia are evident,’ remarked Gwendal Poullennec, the International Director of The Michelin Guide. ‘We look forward to spotlighting their unique culinary experiences.’
In recent years, cities have invested heavily—some over a million dollars—to secure Michelin’s presence, highlighting the economic impact and tourism boost associated with the guide’s ratings. The anticipation for what the Michelin Guide will reveal about Boston and Philadelphia’s culinary landscapes is growing.
