Michelle Trachtenberg, Star of ‘Buffy’ and ‘Gossip Girl’, Dies at 39

NEW YORK (AP) — Michelle Trachtenberg, known for her roles in iconic television series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘ and ‘Gossip Girl,’ has died at the age of 39. She was found unresponsive in her Manhattan apartment on Wednesday morning.
Police received a 911 call at approximately 8 a.m. about a woman in cardiac arrest at One Columbus Place, a luxury apartment tower. First responders pronounced Trachtenberg dead at the scene. Authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected, and an autopsy was declined by her family.
Trachtenberg’s death comes after she underwent a liver transplant within the last year. Sources have indicated that complications related to the transplant may have contributed to her passing, which is still under investigation.
Gary Mantoosh, Trachtenberg’s representative, confirmed her death with deep sadness and requested privacy for the grieving family. “It is with great sadness to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away,” Mantoosh stated.
Born on October 11, 1985, in New York City, Trachtenberg began her acting career at a young age, appearing in the Nickelodeon series ‘The Adventures of Pete & Pete‘ as Nona Mecklenberg. She gained critical recognition for her lead role in the 1996 film ‘Harriet the Spy,’ which established her as a prominent child actress.
Transitioning to more mature roles, Trachtenberg portrayed Dawn Summers, sister to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ from 2000 to 2003. Following her stint on ‘Buffy’, she became a favored antagonist, Georgina Sparks, on the teen drama ‘Gossip Girl’ from 2008 to 2012.
Recently, Trachtenberg had faced scrutiny regarding her health following several Instagram posts where she appeared frail. In response to fans’ concerns about her appearance, she had expressed that she was “happy and healthy” and had never undergone plastic surgery.
Trachtenberg had also been vocal about her experiences on sets, speaking out in 2021 against ‘Buffy’ creator Joss Whedon, alleging abusive behavior during production. Whedon denied the allegations.
Upon news of her passing, many of Trachtenberg’s former co-stars expressed their condolences on social media. Rosie O’Donnell, who starred alongside Trachtenberg in ‘Harriet the Spy,’ mourned the loss, stating, “I loved her very much. She struggled the last few years. I wish I could have helped,” while Ed Westwick, who played Chuck Bass on ‘Gossip Girl,’ honored her memory by sharing a photo of her character.
Trachtenberg’s last credited role was in the ‘Gossip Girl’ revival on Max in 2023, marking a significant contribution to television that spanned more than two decades. Her impact on fans and fellow actors alike has been profound, leaving a legacy remembered for talent and warmth.
