Michigan Senate Campaign 2025

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State Legislator Mallory McMorrow (D) is making headlines as she prepares to enter the Senate race by publicly calling for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to step down. In an interview with Politico, McMorrow expressed her belief that Schumer does not recognize when to step aside, stating, ‘The same approach is not going to work.’

McMorrow, noted as a ‘rising Democratic star,’ indicated that if she is elected, she would not support Schumer’s leadership, expressing the need for new leadership that understands the current political landscape. ‘I would look for other leadership who understands that it’s a different moment,’ she added, praising former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who resigned from a leadership role in 2023.

Schumer’s recent actions have drawn criticism from within his party, particularly after he sided with Republicans to push forward a bill to avert a government shutdown. Reports suggest that at least two House Democrats are calling for his removal, and there is speculation about growing discontent in the caucus, with members expressing that they would support a primary challenge against Schumer.

According to CNN, dissatisfaction is so high that some Democrats are reportedly ‘so mad’ at Schumer’s recent vote that they are ‘ready to write checks’ to support objections from within the party, such as a potential primary challenge from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

McMorrow’s remarks come as she prepares for a Senate campaign to fill the seat of a retiring senator, joining a crowded field. Rumors have circulated that former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was considering a bid as well, but he has chosen to focus on a potential presidential run in 2028.

On the Republican side, former Congressman Mike Rogers, who narrowly lost the Senate race in Michigan in 2024, is expected to announce his candidacy once again. Despite recent losses, Republicans have narrowed the electoral gap in Michigan from 6.5 points in 2018 to a mere 0.3 points in 2024, making the state a hotly contested battleground. Additionally, former President Donald Trump successfully flipped Michigan in the 2024 presidential election.
