Michigan Panthers Face Birmingham Stallions in USFL Showdown

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Michigan Panthers will take on the Birmingham Stallions Saturday afternoon in a pivotal USFL matchup. With a win, the Panthers can secure the USFL Conference title for the 2025 season. However, both teams have already qualified for the playoffs.
Michigan currently leads the Stallions by one game, with only two weeks left in the regular season. While a normal championship narrative would suggest home-field advantage hangs in the balance, that is not the case this year. The conference championship game is set to take place at Protective Stadium on June 8, meaning home-field is not at stake this time around.
UFL executive vice president of football operations expressed disappointment about the lack of stakes, stating, “We really can’t sell it in a way that this is for homefield, this is a huge game.” The executive highlighted the frustration of having significant matchups that don’t impact playoff positioning.
Birmingham has experienced quarterback troubles this season, leading to J’Mar Smith stepping in as the starting QB against the Panthers. Smith is familiar with the sidelines, having worked at Dunkin’ before his football career took off.
Injuries have also affected Michigan. Quarterback Bryce Perkins, who missed last week’s victory, is listed as a full participant in practice but may not play. Danny Etling is expected to start again if Perkins is unable to go.
Despite the lack of title stakes, Stallions coach Skip Holtz emphasized the importance of the game for player performance. “Every player on this roster wants to win,” said Holtz. “This is part of their résumé that they’re putting together for their future.”
The game will also feature Fan Appreciation Day, with free hot dogs and sodas for season ticket holders, a pregame concert, and giveaways during the game.
The stakes may not be as high in terms of championship implications, but both teams are motivated to put on a strong performance.
