Microsoft Raises Xbox Prices Globally Amid Rising Costs

REDMOND, Washington — Microsoft announced on Thursday that it has raised the recommended retail prices of its Xbox video game consoles and some controllers worldwide. The increase, effective May 1, comes as the company cites ‘market conditions and the rising cost of development.’
The price hike means consumers will pay more for consoles this holiday season, coinciding with increases stemming from President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imports. The Xbox Series S now costs $379.99, an increase of $80 from its previous price of $299.99. Meanwhile, the flagship Xbox Series X will retail for $599.99, up $100 from $499.99.
Microsoft stated, ‘We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions.’ The company emphasized its commitment to providing additional opportunities for gamers while ensuring value for Xbox players.
In addition to consoles, Microsoft plans to raise the price of select new first-party games by $10 to $79.99 during the holiday season. The company did not specifically mention whether tariffs on Chinese imports played a role in the pricing decisions, but it acknowledged the economic pressure affecting inventory levels for computer makers.
Price increases also affect the Xbox accessories market, with some controllers seeing price swings. The special edition Xbox Wireless Controller will increase from $69.99 to $79.99. However, Microsoft confirmed that prices for specific controllers, like the Adaptive Controller designed for disabled players, will remain unchanged.
The recent price adjustments follow similar moves by competitors Nintendo and Sony. Nintendo raised prices for its upcoming Switch 2 console and accessories, citing market factors. Sony also recently increased prices for several PlayStation 5 models in select markets. All major gaming companies face rising production costs due to tariffs and supply chain disruptions.
With the gaming landscape rapidly changing, Microsoft’s price adjustments reflect ongoing challenges in the industry. The company noted, ‘Xbox Series S and X availability may continue to change over time depending on the retailer and by country.’
