Miley Cyrus Reveals Health Battles During Live New Year’s Eve Show

LOS ANGELES — Miley Cyrus recently revealed that she endured an “extremely excruciating” pain while performing during her live “New Year’s Eve Party” TV special in 2023. The Grammy-winning musician disclosed that she suffered an ovarian cyst rupture, turning what should have been a joyous event into a medical crisis.
In an interview with DJ Zane Lowe, Cyrus recalled the traumatic experience, stating, “We didn’t know exactly what was going on, but it was pretty traumatic, ’cause it was extremely excruciating. I did the show anyway.” Cyrus, 32, co-hosted the NBC special alongside music legend Dolly Parton, performing live with notable artists like Sia, Paris Hilton, and Latto.
Despite the pain, she refused to cancel, stating that it was a significant opportunity to work with both Parton and producer Lorne Michaels from “Saturday Night Live.” However, she admitted that the experience was challenging and did not elaborate further on her health issues.
Ovarian cysts are common but can cause severe symptoms when ruptured, including pelvic pain and bleeding. Cyrus also shared about facing a polyp on her vocal cords, which influences her performance standing. She compared singing to “running a marathon with weights on,” reflecting on her ongoing struggle with mental and physical health.
Throughout her career, Cyrus has battled with addiction. In December 2020, she spoke about her substance use and how losing fellow artists affected her outlook on sobriety. “I need it. I live for [it]. It’s changed my entire life,” Cyrus remarked, admitting that the path to sobriety had its difficulties.
In 2024, Cyrus won her first Grammy for her hit “Flowers,” highlighting her artistic evolution. She is set to release her ninth studio album, “Something Beautiful,” which she described as deeply personal. “Every single string, sound, sequin, strand of hair, eyelash has been considered and created not only something that I love but something that I’m excited to share with [fans],” Cyrus said.
