Minnesota Schools Close Amid Record-Breaking Cold Temperatures
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Multiple school districts across Minnesota are closing or shifting to e-learning on Monday as the state faces dangerously cold temperatures and subzero wind chills. The extreme weather, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, marks potentially the coldest day in the Twin Cities in six years.
Actual air temperatures have plummeted below zero, with wind chills making it feel like 25 to 45 degrees below zero. A cold weather advisory or extreme cold warning remains in effect until noon for much of the state, with northern Minnesota under an extended warning through Tuesday at noon.
Among the districts affected, Canby Public Schools, Marshall Public Schools, and Tracy Public Schools have announced closures. Many other schools were already scheduled to be closed for the holiday. The extreme cold has prompted widespread delays and cancellations, with Monday morning potentially being the coldest of the winter season.
Highs are expected to remain below zero, with wind chills hovering around minus 30 degrees across much of Minnesota. The WCCO Staff, a team of experienced journalists, is monitoring the situation and providing updates on school closures and delays.
