Mint Julep Tradition Continues at the Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby has long been synonymous with horses, hats, and the iconic Mint Julep cocktail, steeped in tradition and rich history.
Renowned Executive chef, David Danielson, of Churchill Downs, has shared the cherished recipe for this beloved drink that quenches the thirst of the 400,000 attendees during the grand race day.
Although the excitement of the Derby’s two-minute race is fleeting, the festivities and drinking linger throughout the day.
It’s estimated that a staggering 127,000 Mint Juleps are elegantly served at this social gathering of the Bluegrass State, from the early morning bar opening at 8 am until the final cheers at 8:10 pm.
Churchill Downs meticulously crafts these libations by using 254,000 ounces of bourbon, 300 crates of locally sourced mint from Dohn Gardens in Louisville, Kentucky, and a whopping 60,000 pounds of ice to concoct the perfect Mint Julep.
For those creating their own at home, the recipe calls for a simple pour of 2 ounces of Woodford Reserve bourbon and simple syrup over crushed ice, followed by a gentle stir and the essential garnish of a fresh sprig of mint – an embodiment of Southern charm and tradition in a glass.
Chef Danielson emphasizes the importance of using Woodford Reserve bourbon, known for its smoothness and delightful caramel notes, as the heart of every Mint Julep made at Churchill Downs.
The infusion of mint simple syrup, created by steeping mint in a mixture of equal parts sugar and water, adds a refreshing and aromatic touch to this classic cocktail.
To enhance efficiency, Danielson suggests pre-mixing a batch of bourbon and syrup, allowing the flavors to meld in the fridge until ready to serve.
When it’s time to indulge, a quick pour over ice, a garnish with a luxuriant mint sprig, and you’re set to savor this timeless Kentucky tradition, hailed for its essence of prosperity and hospitality.
