CHISINAU, Moldova — Moldova’s Foreign Minister Mihail Popșoi emphasized the urgent need for stronger national security measures during an interview with BBC on February 22, 2025. He underscored the consistent message from American partners urging Europe to take more responsibility for its security.

Popșoi stated, “A certain chaotic behavior in relations between Europe and the U.S. does not contribute to security.” He went on to highlight that the U.S. has been advocating for European nations to enhance their defense capabilities, which he described as a very valid message.

“For 30 years of independence, Moldova has placed security as a low priority. If you are a sovereign country and wish to be taken seriously, you must invest in defense,” Popșoi said. His remarks align with the larger context of shifting European attitudes towards defense spending, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions.

The minister acknowledged that many European nations have begun increasing their defense budgets following U.S. suggestions. He urged Moldova to follow suit, advocating for enhanced defense spending and a reconsideration of security guarantees.

“Russian propaganda claims that neutrality ensures safety, a belief some citizens hold. However, historical experience shows that many neutral countries have still faced conflicts. For instance, Ukraine was largely neutral in 2014 when Russian aggression began,” he highlighted.

Regarding relations with the U.S. administration, Popșoi noted there had been no direct contacts with the new government but indicated ongoing communication through the U.S. State Department. “We had meetings with congressional representatives but not yet with administration officials. Nevertheless, our interactions have been bipartisan,” said Popșoi, referencing his trip to Washington in late 2024.
