Mother Of Four Falls To Her Death In Purgatory Chasm

SUTTON, Mass. — Authorities have identified Carolyn Sanger, a 49-year-old mother from Topsfield, as the woman who fell to her death while hiking with her children at Purgatory Chasm on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
According to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Sanger was hiking with three of her four children when she fell approximately 50 to 75 feet into the chasm around 2 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Massachusetts State Police troopers who were dispatched following a 911 call.
The tragic accident occurred in Purgatory Chasm State Reservation, a popular hiking destination known for its steep cliffs and rugged terrain. “This is currently an active investigation but does appear to be accidental,” a police statement read.
Friends and family have expressed their sorrow at Sanger’s untimely death. A GoFundMe page has been established for her family, raising over $25,000 as of Thursday. “For those that knew Carrie, know that she was a bright light; a wonderful, selfless mother,” the page stated.
Local residents and friends spoke highly of Sanger, describing her as an integral part of the community. “She was a friend to all, and her smile and kind spirit will be greatly missed,” said Mo Levasseur, a close friend.
Sutton Police Chief Tom Calouro extended condolences to Sanger’s family. “From the town of Sutton, we extend our sympathies to the family for this tragic, tragic loss,” Calouro remarked.
Visitors to the park are often reminded of the dangers of the rugged landscape. “There’s some parts that are scary; you have to really pay attention and keep track of your kids,” hiker Jasmine Duffy said. “They can’t go too far ahead of you, there are definitely dangerous areas.”
The area contains trails that are both scenic and perilous, prompting warnings for hikers to exercise caution.
This incident is still under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
