Military Career

Buhari served in the Nigerian Army for 25 years, rising through the ranks to become a major general. He participated in the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970) and commanded the 2nd Division of the Nigerian Army.

In 1983, Buhari led a coup d’état that overthrew the democratically elected government of Shehu Shagari. He became the military Head of State of Nigeria and ruled for two years. He was overthrown in a coup d’état in 1985 by General Ibrahim Babangida.

Political Career

After his overthrow, Buhari retired from the military and entered politics. He ran for President of Nigeria in 2003, 2007, and 2011, but was unsuccessful in all three elections.

In 2015, Buhari ran for President of Nigeria again on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He won the election and was sworn in as President on May 29, 2015. He was re-elected in 2019 for a second term.
