Isle Royale National Park Campers Deaths

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – The National Park Service (NPS) is investigating the deaths of two unidentified campers found at Isle Royale National Park, a remote island in Lake Superior, on Sunday.

Park rangers received reports around 4:00 p.m. of two bodies discovered at a backcountry campground. In response, two rangers hiked 11 miles overnight to the location, reaching the scene early Monday morning. They confirmed the presence of the deceased individuals, though the causes of death remain unknown, according to the NPS.

Starting Monday, additional ground and aviation resources were deployed to assist in the investigation. The NPS indicated that more information would be provided as it becomes available.

The agency declined to comment on specific details following a media inquiry, but a spokesperson clarified that the deaths are not linked to an unrelated arrest captured on video last week by U.P. Adventure Company.

Isle Royale National Park, known for its rugged terrain, has campsites that are accessible only by foot or watercraft. The park is noted for its limited emergency services, making it vital for visitors to be prepared and self-reliant.

The NPS stated that it will continue to share updates as the investigation unfolds and as new details are confirmed.
