National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Set for April 26

ROANOKE, Va. – On Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., communities across the U.S. will participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event provides a chance for people to drop off unwanted and expired medications at various law enforcement locations.
Organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), this event aims to encourage safe disposal of medications to prevent misuse and protect the environment. Nearly 5,000 sites will be available nationwide for the collection.
“Medications can be critical for treating health conditions but can also lead to dangerous situations if misused,” said Dr. Sheranda Gunn-Nolan, Chief Medical Officer at Sovah Health. “It’s essential to maintain safe medication habits.”
The DEA emphasizes that disposing of medications properly is key to preventing opioid addiction and other forms of medication misuse. Medications should never be thrown in the trash or flushed down the toilet, as they can contaminate water supplies and pose risks for individuals.
Collection locations will not accept liquid products, but solid medications can be safely disposed of anonymously and at no cost.
For those unable to participate on Saturday, year-round drop-off locations are available. Residents can find additional information by visiting local resources and health department websites.
“Using the medication drop boxes is a convenient way to help keep our communities safe and healthy,” said officials.
