NBA’s Anthony Edwards Fined $50K for Inappropriate Gesture to Fan

NEW YORK — Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves has been fined $50,000 for using inappropriate language and making an obscene gesture toward a fan during a playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers, NBA president of league operations Byron Spruell announced on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the third quarter of Game 1 of their first-round playoff series on Saturday night in Los Angeles, where the Timberwolves won 117-95. Edwards intervened as his teammate, Rudy Gobert, was being heckled by fans.
Edwards, standing near the sideline, responded to the heckling by telling a fan how much Gobert earns, saying “I got $200 million.” The exchange escalated, with Edwards making a lewd comment that included, “my d–k bigger than yours,” while making an obscene gesture. This moment was recorded and soon went viral on social media.
League officials noted that while players trash-talking with fans is not uncommon, Edwards’ remarks crossed the line. The situation intensified after a fan referenced Edwards’ family, prompting a heightened response from the player. With a total of six fines this season, Edwards has accumulated $295,000 in penalties, including one for using profane language during a live television interview.
Despite the fines, the Timberwolves will look to advance in the playoffs. Game 2 is scheduled for Tuesday night in Los Angeles, where the team hopes to take a 2-0 lead in the series against the Lakers after their recent victory.
