Netflix Revives ‘Little House on the Prairie’ with New Series
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Netflix is bringing the beloved Ingalls family back to the small screen with a new adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder‘s classic ‘Little House on the Prairie‘ books. The series, set to debut in 2025, marks the first major TV revival of the story in over 40 years.
Rebecca Sonnenshine, known for her work on ‘The Boys‘ and ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ will serve as showrunner. ‘Little House on the Prairie has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many fans around the world, and we’re excited to share its enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story,’ said Jinny Howe, Netflix’s vice president of drama series.
Sonnenshine, who grew up reading Wilder’s books, expressed her enthusiasm for the project. ‘I fell deeply in love with these books when I was five years old. They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new global audience with Netflix,’ she said.
The new series will blend elements of family drama, survival tales, and the history of the American West. It aims to provide a ‘kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier,’ according to Netflix.
The project has been in development since 2020, with executive producers Joy Gorman Wettels, Trip Friendly, Dana Fox, and Susanna Fogel attached from the start. Friendly, whose father Ed Friendly produced the original series, shared his excitement about continuing his family’s legacy. ‘It has been a long-held dream of mine to carry on my father’s legacy and adapt Wilder’s classic American stories for a 21st century audience,’ he said.
The original ‘Little House on the Prairie’ series, which aired from 1974 to 1983, remains a cultural touchstone. Starring Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, and Melissa Gilbert, the show continues to draw viewers on streaming platforms like Peacock. Nielsen reported that U.S. audiences watched over 1 billion minutes of the original series in 2024 alone.
The reboot is a collaboration between CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios, with Sonnenshine and her team aiming to honor the spirit of Wilder’s books while introducing the story to a new generation.
