New Leadership at the Defence Ministry: Angie Motshekga Steps In with Two Deputies
Following the recent government cabinet announcement by Cyril Ramaphosa, a new chapter unfolds at the Defence and Military Veterans Ministry with the appointment of Angie Motshekga as the Minister alongside two deputies.
Ramaphosa leads a unique government setup where a government of national unity was formed after the elections due to the absence of an outright majority for the ANC.
Motshekga will be tasked with overseeing critical entities such as the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the Department of Military Veterans, among others like Armscor and the Castle of Good Hope through the Castle Control Board.
Amongst the list of deputies, Bantu Holomisa, a former TDF commander and experienced politician, stands out with his background in GNUs, having been part of the 1994 setup.
Richard Mkhungo, president of the SA National Civic Organisation (SANCO), serves as the second deputy minister, with a key role in supporting Motshekga in her new portfolio.
Angie Motshekga, a veteran politician and former Minister of Basic Education, brings her experience to a ministry previously led by Thandi Modise, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, and Lindiwe Sisulu over the years.
Kobus Marais, a former Democratic Alliance Member of Parliament, expresses his apprehension regarding the new appointments, questioning the selection process amidst high expectations for competent and capable leadership in the Defence Ministry.
Dean Wingrin, a defense expert, emphasizes the challenges ahead for Motshekga in stabilizing the SANDF while noting the importance of Holomisa’s appointment as Deputy Minister in fortifying the Department of Defence.
In response to his appointment, Holomisa expresses his readiness to serve in national security and highlights the need for a comprehensive strategy to address the challenges faced by the South African National Defence Force, particularly in international deployments.
