New T20 Spring Challenge Set to Bolster Women’s Cricket in Australia
The T20 Spring Challenge, a new domestic 20-over cricket tournament, is set to launch in Australia, designed to ensure no decrease in women’s domestic cricket matches following the reduction of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) season from 14 to 10 games per club. This competition will feature nine teams, including eight teams aligned with Big Bash clubs and one team from the ACT.
The tournament will commence on October 11 in Adelaide and Sydney, with 18 regular-season matches scheduled over seven days. These games will determine which teams advance to the semi-finals and final. Matches will take place at venues such as Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide and North Sydney Oval, with the finals hosted at Cricket Central in Sydney Olympic Park.
The Spring Challenge will debut with four matches on its opening day, featuring the Sydney Thunder against the Brisbane Heat at North Sydney Oval and Sydney Sixers facing ACT Meteors at the same venue. Concurrently, the Melbourne Renegades will compete against the Hobart Hurricanes at Karen Rolton Oval, followed by the Adelaide Strikers playing the Perth Scorchers.
Cricket fans can attend these matches free of charge as every game will be streamed live on Kayo and the CA Live app. The competition serves as an important precursor to the upcoming WBBL|10 season, with the league set to begin a week following the Spring Challenge’s conclusion.
Notable players participating in the tournament include South African cricket star Lizelle Lee, representing the Hobart Hurricanes, and Tahlia Wilson, who will lead Sydney Thunder as captain. The tournament, however, overlaps with the Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE, resulting in the absence of many Australian contracted players.
The Brisbane Heat has confirmed a squad featuring seven contracted WBBL Heat players for the Spring Challenge. The team will compete against various clubs, with the first game against Sydney Thunder scheduled to take place at North Sydney Oval.
