Sydney Metro Train Station

Today is a big day for Sydney as new metro services officially open, making commuting easier for everyone. These new metro lines stretch from Chatswood in the north-west, dive under the harbour, and pop up through the heart of Sydney’s central business district to Sydenham.

Commuters can now enjoy an extra 15.5 kilometers of new railway, with six shiny new underground stations. There are also new metro platforms at Central Station and Sydenham Station. The first passenger train left Sydenham Station at 4:54 AM this morning, kicking off the new metro service.

The weekday timetable is designed to provide frequent services, with trains coming every four minutes during peak hours and every seven minutes at other times. After a few weeks, that service will ramp up to a 5-minute wait during off-peak times. Each weekday, 445 new metro services will operate through the city, helping to ease congestion on the existing transport networks.

This newly expanded metro network connects key areas like Sydney’s employment, financial, and retail hubs. It even unlocks a brand new station at Barangaroo, making it even easier for commuters to navigate the busy city.

The project is part of the M1 Northwest & Bankstown Line, which now stretches a total of 51.5 kilometers and stops at 21 stations. Sydney Metro aims to handle thousands of passengers during peak hours, potentially moving more people than the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel combined.

Over the first few days, more metro staff will be at stations and on trains to help people get used to the new services. They’re also providing audio and video help points at each station for immediate assistance.

Although all city stations are open now, slight construction work is ongoing at many new stations for improvements like roads and footpaths. New buildings at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Gadigal, and Waterloo are still under development.

For anyone traveling from Chatswood to Sydenham, it now only takes about 22 minutes – a big win for commuters. A journey along the full line from Sydenham to Tallawong will take less than an hour.
