New York Liberty Valuation Hits $450 Million, Setting Women’s Sports Record

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Liberty have achieved a record valuation of $450 million following a successful capital raise from a group of investors, as reported by The Athletic on May 22, 2025.
This valuation is more than double the previous publicly known figure for a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) franchise. Last summer, the Dallas Wings raised capital at a valuation of $208 million. The size of the shares sold in the Liberty’s capital raise is believed to be in the “mid-teens,” although the exact number of investors has not been disclosed. The deal is still pending approval from the league.
The funds will reportedly be used to construct a new practice facility. This facility, projected to open in 2027, will be located in Brooklyn and span 75,000 square feet. It will feature two full practice courts, private suites for players, a recovery suite, a hair and makeup studio, and a two-story strength training room. The Liberty aim for it to be the first WNBA facility “designed by players, for players,” with an expected cost of $80 million.
Since being purchased by Clara Wu Tsai and her husband, Joe Tsai, in January 2019, the Liberty have transformed both their roster and their marketing approach. The team won its first WNBA championship in October and has seen significant growth in sponsorships, which increased by nearly 61% by the end of the last year. Revenue from partnerships was up 68% during the same period.
Wu Tsai recently expressed ambitions to make the Liberty the first women’s sports franchise valued at $1 billion by the mid-2030s. She mentioned the increasing interest and investment in women’s sports as a driving factor.
The Liberty opened the 2025 season with a win against the Las Vegas Aces and will face the Chicago Sky on Thursday.
