New York Times Strands Puzzle Offers Daily Word Challenge

New York, NY
The New York Times has introduced a new daily word puzzle called Strands, similar in concept to classic word search games. Players are tasked with identifying words that share a common theme from a grid filled with letters.
Every day, the Strands puzzle presents a six by eight grid. The objective is to find words related to a given theme, which gets revealed at the start of the game. Once a word is identified, it is emphasized in blue. In addition, players need to uncover a special word known as the spangram, which highlights the underlying connection among the theme words, marked in yellow.
The spangram must relate to the words but can also be a proper noun. Players can connect letters in various ways—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally—and can even change direction while spelling words. If three valid words of four letters or more are found that do not relate to the theme, the Hint button becomes available, assisting players in locating theme words.
Today’s theme revolves around “Body Language,” offering seven words to discover. The spangram for this puzzle is “GESTURES.” Each day’s game, available at midnight local time, aims to engage users with varying degrees of difficulty. Today, players encountered terms like “HANDSHAKE” and “NAMASTE,” which speak to physical expressions of communication.
“I found ‘HANDSHAKE’ quickly, but it took longer to identify ‘NAMASTE’,” said Kris Holt, a contributor at Forbes covering the game. “The variety of words chosen can challenge your understanding of gestures.”
The puzzle creators often incorporate surprising elements, prompting players to think creatively and critically. Strands is part of the NYT’s growing lineup of word games, making daily engagements fun as players hone their vocabulary and problem-solving skills.
