New Yorkers Vote in Key Mayoral Race on Election Day
NEW YORK CITY — New Yorkers are casting their votes today in a closely watched mayoral election featuring three main candidates: Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, Republican Curtis Sliwa, and independent Andrew Cuomo. Voting began at 6 a.m. and will run until 9 p.m., with Spectrum News NY1 providing free coverage throughout the day.
Mamdani, a Queens Assemblyman, represents a progressive shift, focusing on affordability and public safety. Cuomo, a former governor, aims to leverage his experience, while Sliwa, founder of The Guardian Angels, bases his campaign on crime and safety.
Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is not seeking reelection, prompting a competitive race. In addition to the mayoral election, voters will decide contests for City Council seats, Public Advocate, and Borough Presidents across the city.
In Queens, Republican City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino is pushing for reelection with promises of more infrastructure improvements. Her opponent, Democrat Benjamin Chou, advocates for innovative crime solutions, such as motion sensor lights.
According to the city’s Board of Elections, over 400,000 voters participated in early voting. Brooklyn led the turnout with over 126,000 early ballots, while Manhattan followed closely behind.
A latest CBS News exit poll indicates that cost of living is the top concern among voters, with crime trailing behind. The outcome of this election could reshape New York City‘s political landscape and set the tone for future policy.
As the polls close this evening, results are expected to start flowing in, revealing which candidate will take the helm as New York City’s next mayor.
