Nik Juarez Prepares for Thrilling Kentucky Derby Debut

BALTIMORE, Md. — Maryland jockey Nik Juarez is set to make his debut at the 151st Kentucky Derby after a notable victory in the Virginia Derby. Riding the horse American Promise, Juarez claimed his first-ever qualifier for the prestigious race, marking a significant moment in his 12-year racing career.
‘That moment, that’s when we all knew,’ Juarez told 11 News. ‘The light bulb turned on that day. The light bulb stayed on. And I’m very, very excited for Saturday.’
Horse racing runs deep in Juarez’s family. His father was a jockey in the 1990s, and his mother’s father worked as an outrider for the Maryland Jockey Club. Juarez reflected on these family ties, saying, ‘My father, coming to America with an American dream, he came here when he was 14. It’s pretty cool to be on a horse named American Promise. My dad really is living the American dream.’
At Churchill Downs, Juarez will again ride American Promise, described as a striking 17-hand horse and the son of Triple Crown winner Justify. The horse is prepared for the challenges ahead, having been trained by Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
Juarez believes they have a strong chance of winning the race. ‘This year, I believe we can take the title,’ he said. He aims to inspire the next generation, especially Maryland youth, through his journey in the sport.
‘You can always change your life. There’s always somebody. There’s always an outlet,’ Juarez said. ‘If you ever have an opportunity to get around a horse, it’ll change your life.’
