Niko Mikkola Stars in Panthers’ Game 1 Victory Over Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. — Niko Mikkola, a defenseman for the Florida Panthers, showcased his extraordinary skills during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final on May 21, 2025. Known for his impressive size and wingspan, Mikkola earned the nickname ‘Condor’ from teammates. During the game, he played a pivotal role, assisting A.J. Greer in scoring a key goal, leading the Panthers to a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.
‘Mikks for Norris,’ forward Carter Verhaeghe said with a smile when discussing Mikkola’s performance. ‘He’s such a complete defenseman. I definitely wouldn’t like to play against him.’ His blend of reach and skating ability has made Mikkola a standout player.
Despite the play violating a few team rules, Panthers head coach Paul Maurice couldn’t help but smile. ‘I got mocked heavily on the bench for that goal,’ Maurice said, acknowledging Mikkola’s speed and opportunistic play. ‘We’re going to do everything we can to never see that again.’
Standing at 6-foot-6, Mikkola quickly adapted his style of play since joining the Panthers as a free agent in 2023. His ability to rush up the ice has been notable, transforming him into an integral part of the Panthers’ defense. ‘His straight-line speed is incredible,’ Maurice commented.
In addition to his assist, Mikkola contributed defensively with three hits and two takeaways in nearly 20 minutes of ice time. He also played a crucial role in thwarting a dangerous 2-on-1 rush for the Hurricanes.
Captain Aleksander Barkov praised Mikkola’s contributions. ‘He’s been really impressive. For his size, he moves so well. He has a good defensive stick and plays the game the right way,’ Barkov explained.
Mikkola’s improvement has been evident over the past two seasons. After setting a career high with 17 points during the 2023-24 season, he achieved new personal bests of six goals and 22 points this season. He leads the Panthers with 335 hits and 212 blocks over the past two years.
As the series continues, the Panthers hope to take a 2-0 lead against Carolina. Mikkola and his teammates are set to return for Game 2 at Lenovo Center on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.
