Nikola Vucevic Chicago Bulls Game Action

TORONTO — As the NBA trade deadline approaches, Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vucevic finds himself in familiar territory: the center of trade rumors. The 6-foot-10, 260-pound veteran, known for his versatile skill set, is once again a potential target for teams looking to bolster their rosters for a playoff push.

Vucevic, 33, has been through this before. “I mean, I think I’ve kind of learned to shut it off and not worry about it too much over the years because I’ve been in so many rumors, trade talks, things like that,” Vucevic said Friday. “You just learn to deal with it. When I was younger, I thought about it more, it affected me more. But now you kind of, I mean, obviously as it gets closer, there’s a kind of waiting to see what happens.”

The Bulls (21-28) are reportedly exploring options to move Vucevic, who is averaging 21 points and 12 rebounds per game this season. A source close to the situation told the Sun-Times that Bulls executive vice president Arturas Karnisovas has been in discussions with the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns, monitoring their interest in All-Star Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat. If Butler is traded, it could open the door for Vucevic to be moved as part of a larger deal.

Vucevic’s performance on the court hasn’t been affected by the speculation. In a recent 122-106 victory over the Toronto Raptors, he scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, setting the tone early with 12 points in the first quarter. “I thought he had everything kind of going,” Bulls coach Billy Donovan said. “With Zach [LaVine] being out [for the birth of his child], we need him to do more of that.”

Despite his strong play, Vucevic’s future in Chicago remains uncertain. The Bulls are in the midst of a rebuild, and Vucevic, who is in the final year of a three-year, $60 million contract, is not part of their long-term plans. “I’m getting closer to the end of my career,” Vucevic told the Chicago Tribune. “I would like to be somewhere that’s in win-now mode.”

Potential suitors for Vucevic include the Warriors and Suns, both of whom are in need of a veteran big man. The Warriors, in particular, have shown consistent interest in Vucevic, but the Bulls are reportedly holding out for a first-round pick in any deal. “It’s been frustrating,” Vucevic said of the trade rumors. “I’m trying not to overthink it too much. That’s normally where I get stuck is thinking too much about it and letting the misses kind of take over everything.”

For now, Vucevic remains focused on his role with the Bulls. “For now, I’m good where I’m at,” he said. “Obviously the team has to be better. We understand that. But at this point, (leaving Chicago) is not something that I’m thinking about. In a year and a half when I’m a free agent again, we’ll see.”

As the trade deadline looms, Vucevic’s future remains uncertain. Whether he stays in Chicago or is moved to a contender, one thing is clear: the veteran center is ready for whatever comes next.
